Microsoft To Buy Bethesda In $7.5 Billion Deal, Acquiring Fallout, The Elder Scrolls

In what is set to be one of the largest ever acquisitions in the video game industry, Microsoft announced Monday that it has reached a deal to acquire ZeniMax Media, the parent company of popular video game publisher Bethesda Softworks, for $7.5 billion.

Once the deal is finalized, Bethesda properties including The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, Quake, Starfield and DOOM will be owned by Microsoft. These series will be added to the Xbox Game Pass, a subscription-based cloud gaming service which has topped 15 million subscribers.

The Bethesda deal is expected to be finalized in the second half of fiscal year 2021.

"With the addition of Bethesda, Microsoft will grow from 15 to 23 creative studio teams and will be adding Bethesda's iconic franchises to Xbox Game Pass," Microsoft wrote in a release. "This includes Microsoft's intent to bring Bethesda's future games into Xbox Game Pass the same day they launch on Xbox or PC."

This deal is three times the $2.5 billion that Microsoft paid for Mojang, the company behind Minecraft, in 2014. It will be Microsoft's most expensive video game acquisition ever.

"We're still Bethesda. We're still working on the same games we were yesterday, made by the same studios we've worked with for years, and those games will be published by us," Pete Hines, Bethesda's senior vice president of PR and marketing, said in a blog post. "[The deal] allows us to make even better games going forward. Microsoft is an incredible partner and offers access to resources that will make us a better publisher and developer."

This announcement comes a day before pre-orders of its new Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles go live. Microsoft's competitor Sony started accepting pre-orders last week for its PlayStation

As Disasters Roil Earth, A New Sun Cycle Promises Calmer Weather — In Space

Giant flares and eruptions from the sun can cause space weather, and stormy space weather can interfere with everything from satellites to the electrical grid to airplane communications. Now, though, there's good news for people who monitor the phenomenon — the sun has passed from one of its 11-year activity cycles into another, and scientists predict that the new cycle should be just about as calm as the last.

That doesn't mean, however, zero risk of extreme weather events. Even during the last, relatively weak solar cycle, drama on the sun triggered occasional weirdness on Earth like radio blackouts, disruptions in air traffic control, power outages — and even beautiful aurorae seen as far south as Alabama.

Over each solar cycle, the roiling sun moves from a relatively quiet period through a much more active one. Researchers monitor all this activity by keeping an eye on the number of sunspots, temporary dark patches on the sun's surface. These spots are associated with solar activity like giant explosions that send light, energy, and solar material into space.

Facebook VP Nick Clegg On New Climate Change Information Hub

Facebook is launching a climate change information page in an effort to promote facts about climate change from trusted sources.

Users in the U.S., U.K., France and Germany are seeing links and information from Facebook's Climate Change Information Center starting Tuesday. It's similar to the COVID-19 information page launched in March.

The spread of misinformation of all kinds has been a huge problem for the company, especially after evidence emerged of fake news on Facebook during the 2016 election campaign.

The climate information page features articles from reputable news sources and social media posts from government and international agencies like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the World Meteorological Organization.

Facebook says it partners with more than 70 organizations to fact-check misinformation, including that related to climate change. There has been some controversy over what is exempted from fact-checking as "opinion" when it comes to climate change.

"We are hopeful this climate science information center will be very effective," says Facebook Vice President of Global Affairs and Communications Nick Clegg.

"It provides a simple, easy-to-find repository for authoritative information about what is happening to our climate, how it's changing. And our experience with the COVID information hub is that there is a real appetite for people to find out more for themselves."

How Countries Around The World Are Coping With New Surge In Coronavirus Cases

India is poised to overtake the U.S. as the country with the most COVID-19 cases. This week the Taj Mahal reopened to tourists for the first time in more than six months. NPR correspondent Lauren Frayer reports on how that's not an indication that the pandemic there has subsided.

Across Europe, countries are also seeing cases surge. NPR correspondents Frank Langfitt, Eleanor Beardsley, and Rob Schmitz discuss the rise in cases, new restrictions and how people are coping in the U.K., France and Germany.

North Korean Troops Fatally Shoot South Korean Man Believed Attempting To Defect

Seoul has condemned its northern neighbor for what it calls the brutal killing of a South Korean fisheries official, who went missing earlier this week near the maritime border between the rival states.

The move is likely to aggravate inter-Korean tensions, which have flared again, after a brief interlude of summit diplomacy in 2018 and 2019.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in called the killing a "shocking incident that cannot be tolerated for any reason." A statement from the South's Defense Ministry decried the "brutal act" and urged Pyongyang "to provide an explanation and punish those responsible."

Lawmakers on the South Korean legislature's National Defense Committee adopted a resolution condemning the killing.

It is believed to be the first time North Korean forces have shot and killed a South Korean since 2008, when a South Korean tourist was shot dead while visiting the Mount Kumgang resort in North Korea.

South Korea notified U.S. authorities and tried to contact North Korea via channels between the United Nations Command and Pyongyang on Wednesday but did not get a response as of Thursday evening local time.

South Korean media report the 47-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was working on a patrol boat keeping South Korean fishers from straying across the border and watching for illegal fishing in waters near the de facto maritime border between the two Koreas in the Yellow Sea, known as the Northern Limit Line.

The official's colleagues reported him missing to the South Korean Coast Guard Monday. His shoes, wallet and notebook were found aboard the patrol boat, but his phone was missing.

Details of the shooting come from South Korean media, citing unnamed military officials.

They say the man was found floating in North Korean waters the next day, wearing a life vest. They add that circumstantial evidence suggests he was attempting to defect to North Korea. But the man's brother told the Joongang Ilbo newspaper that he was not the sort of person who would defect.

Tuesday evening, hours after his discovery, North Korean troops wearing gas masks arrived and shot the official to death, then poured oil on his body and burned it, South Korean media report.

There was speculation that the move could be related to North Korean efforts to prevent the coronavirus from entering the country.

The North claims not to have a single case of the virus, but experts are skeptical.

After three inter-Korean summits between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in in 2018 and 2019, ties have frayed, as Kim became disillusioned with the prospects for a nuclear disarmament deal with the U.S. and President Trump, and with Seoul's ability to broker an advantageous deal.

Dutch Celebrities Face Backlash After Rejecting Efforts To Prevent COVID-19

Several Dutch celebrities are being heavily criticized after announcing they would no longer take part in public efforts to combat COVID-19 and for their apparent support of a conspiracy theory suggesting that the government is using fear of the virus to control the population.

With the hashtag #ikdoenietmeermee ("I no longer participate"), the musicians and influencers, led by 21-year-old rapper and model Famke Louise, posted videos to social media saying they were opting out of campaigns to promote social distancing and the use of face masks.

In a video posted Monday to her 1 million Instagram followers, the rap artist spoke of the need to work together to "get the government back under control."

Later, on the popular talk show Jinek, Famke Louise sought to clarify her position. "I don't mind the 1.5m [5 foot] society," she said of those who practice social distancing. "It's about the principle that we live in a society where people need their freedom, in which people just want to have fun."

The YouTube star turned rapper was among a number of celebrities and influencers who had previously appeared in government-funded campaigns to promote public health measures aimed at containing the deadly coronavirus.

Others high-profile individuals in the Netherlands who signed on to the #ikdoenietmeermee hashtag include hip-hop star Bizzey, 35, and the singers Tim Douwsma, 32, and Thomas Berge, 30.

In a reference to Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte's recent comment that cheering soccer fans should "just shut up" to avoid spreading the virus, the celebrities in their videos said they were "no longer keeping their mouths shut."

Older People, Got A Pandemic Problem? A Club To Help You Figure It Out — Yourself

It's a bit hard to describe Vietnam's Intergenerational Self Help Clubs.

But one thing is easy to say. If you're older — like above the age of 60 — and need help, the club will help you get it. That could mean a microloan if times are tough, a drum lesson as a chance for self-expression and social activity (and to prove that old people can play drums, too). And during the pandemic, the clubs have played a critical role informing and supporting its members.

There are around 3,000 of the clubs in Vietnam, with 160,000 participants, most of them older people The goal is to help older people and people with disabilities — and people in any age group can volunteer. That's why "intergenerational" is part of the name.

But the idea is for club members to find solutions to their own problems. It's a model that's earned the club the grand prize for the Healthy Aging Prize for Asian Innovation in July. Organized by the Japan Center for International Exchange and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia, the award recognizes best practices in addressing challenges of rapidly aging societies in Asia.

Even though Vietnam has been relatively fortunate during the pandemic — with only about 1,000 cases — the virus has still been a focus for the club members.

"They're playing a very positive role. They help disseminate useful information about COVID-19 to older people. They also help raise funds and collect money, rice and face masks to give away to older people in the club," says Duc Le, communications officer for Help Age International, Vietnam.
